Research Interests:

  • Medieval secular and ecclesiastical spatial divisions (trícha cét, cantred, local-kingdom, túath, manor, parish and proto-parish, rural deanery, diocese, baile biataig, vill and townland);
  • Origins and development of early medieval ecclesiastical estates and their reconstruction, including the related questions of the development of paruchiae, history of the lesser churches, provision of pastoral care, and the origin and development of saints’ cults;
  • Medieval genealogy.

Funded Projects:

Senior historical consultant with Making Christian Landscapes, an INSTAR project funded by the Heritage Council and based in the Dept. of Archaeology, UCC.  Work includes reconstructing medieval spatial divisions in the various study areas and aspects of early ecclesiastical history in relation to landscape development.
