The Company embarked in 2005 on a project, funded by a bequest from a former member, to compile an annotated biographical roll of those admitted to it between its foundation in 1537 and 31st March 1908. The roll is modelled on Sir Wasey Sterry’s The Eton College Register 1441-1698 and currently contains in the region of 17, 000 names. It is housed on a Microsoft Access database and will be published in book form when complete.
The Company seeks to appoint a full-time researcher to join the existing team of three part-time researchers who work under a full-time member of staff. The work involves identifying and extracting relevant data from primary and secondary sources of the sixteenth to twentieth centuries and entering them accurately into the database.
Applicants should be graduates (preferably in history) with experience of postgraduate research in history. They should be accustomed to using pre-twentieth-century primary sources. Excellent written communication skills are essential, as is proficiency in the use of computers, especially MS Access. Editorial experience would be very advantageous. Also necessary is the ability to work independently whilst relating to the work of the research team as a whole.
The Company received a Royal Charter in 1537 and supports the oldest regiment in the British Army. It has close links with the City of London, where many members of the regiment work.
