CFP: “Building the city in the Middle Ages”; Nájera, 28-31 July 2009

Deadline: 25 April 2009.

This summer the town of Nájera will once again host the International Meetings of the Middle Ages, organised by the University of Cantabria and the Local Government with co-organizers from Spain, England, France and Italy. The international conference will take place in Nájera (Spain), from July 28-31.

The topic of this year is about Building the city in the Middle Ages. First, we will study every kind of constructions, infrastructures and facilities in medieval towns, such as civic buildings, castles and palaces, common houses, churches, cathedrals and monastics houses, town halls, buildings for storage, streets, bridges, dockyards, wharves, town walls, towers and gate constructions, market squares, water infrastructures, sewage, fountains… Secondly, the construction processes involved a lot of people, so we want study the world of the workers: carpenters, labourer, painters, carters, quarrymen, master masons, smiths… Finally, we will study the building techniques.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

Historians and Graduate students are encouraged to submit abstracts for research presentations on topics related to “Building the city in the Middle Ages”. Abstracts should be no more than 350 words and should clearly state the purpose, thesis, methodology, and principal findings of the paper to be presented. Successful proposals will be published in 2010.

All abstracts should be submitted electronically (either as a MS Word document or as text in the body of an e-mail) to Dr. Jesús A. Solórzano Telechea at solorzaja@unican.es. The deadline for submissions will be May 11, 2008.

The languages of the international conference are Spanish, English, French, Portuguese and Italian.
