George Petrie: Artist and Antiquarian

Peter Murray (Director of the Crawford Art Gallery) will discuss the work of artist and antiquarian George Petrie, often called “the father of Irish archaeology”. His Notebook of Irish Antiquities will be on display in the National Library of Ireland’s new exhibition Particles of the Past opening on the 28 February. In the notebook, Petrie has depicted watercolour drawings of artefacts from the Bronze Age in beautiful detail. Petrie was passionate about Irish heritage and many of the artefacts which Petrie collected are now part of the collection of the National Museum.

To celebrate the opening of the NLI’s new exhibition, Peter Murray will lecture on the work of George Petrie on Wednesday 29 February at 7pm in the National Library’s Seminar room. Admission is free and no booking is required.
