The English Department in the Faculty of Philosophy of Göttingen University proposes to appoint a 50%- Stipendiary Lecturer in Medieval English Literature and Language from 1st October 2014. The post is fixed for six months. An extension of the post may be possible.
The successful candidate will be able to provide comprehensive teaching coverage in the area of medieval English literature and language as well as the material culture of handwritten texts. The candidate will also have a strong research record in the period pre-1550 appropriate to the stage of his or her career; will possess at least a Master’s Degree in this field; will demonstrate excellent knowledge of both Old and Middle English; will have experience in teaching and be able to supervise and examine undergraduates; and will be willing and able to contribute to administration in the medieval studies section of the department. All courses are taught and all assessments are held exclusively in English.
A basic knowledge of German is desirable. The university offers further support through free intensive language courses. The postholder will be required to provide a minimum of eight hours of teaching per week during full term; to undertake undergraduate examining; to participate in the planning of research projects and colloquia; and to perform minor administrative roles and mentoring functions within the department and the faculty.
The salary for this post will be on a scale of c. 21,000-24,000 EUR p.a (Entgeltgruppe 13/Lehrkräfte TV-L). A moderate annual research allowance may be provided through the Professorship of English Medieval Studies.
