A Conference on “Outlaws, Ballads and Bandits in Popular Tradition” in conjunction with the Annual Irish Conference of Folklore and Ethnology/Tionól Béaloideasa agus Eitneolaíochta in Éirinn.
10th and 11th December 2019 at the National University of Ireland, Merrion Square, Dublin.
Confirmed Keynotes: Professor Juan Pablo Dabove (CU Boulder) and Associate Professor Éva Guillorel (University of Caen) who will deliver the Bo Almqvist Memorial Lecture.
The UCD School of Languages and Cultures and the School of Irish, Celtic Studies and Folklore invite submissions for this conference based around bandits, ballads and outlaws in popular tradition and in folklore. Many cultures, including Ireland’s, have rich histories of social banditry, and the event is open to scholars from varied disciplines: Hispanic Studies, Folklore, Film Studies, Music, Criminology, inter alia. We invite contributors to consider the term ‘outlaw’ in its broadest sense. Contributions could include (but are not limited to) topics such as: the bandit in cultural memory, outlaws in oral history versus actual history, local bandit traditions in Latin America, Ireland and elsewhere, rebels and outlaws as hero figures, and comparative analysis of bandit cultures. We want to bring scholars together to work interdisciplinarily and benefit from the resources available in Dublin, such as the National Folklore Collection, housed in UCD.
Though the main theme of the conference is bandits, the conference also focuses on Irish Folklore and Ethnology and we will be happy to accept a number of papers that fit within this broad theme but do not deal with banditry.
