Job:Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (History), NUI Galway

Deadline: 17 July

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a one year fixed-term contract as postdoctoral researcher in History, at the School of Humanities.

As a result of IRCHSS funding for the project Vincent de Paul: An Icon in the Making, a one year position for a postdoctoral scholar is available at NUI Galway.  The purpose of the project is to deepen historical understanding of the character and evolution of early modern catholicism through study of the values and activities of Vincent de Paul (1581-1660), missionary, advisor to the French crown, and founder of the Congregation of the Mission, the Daughters of Charity and confraternities of charity.  De Paul’s approach to the generation of religious and moral piety provides an important means of assessing the cultural priorities and impact of the Catholic Reformation.

Working under the direction of project leader Dr Alison Forrestal, the successful candidate will compile for multimedia publication an annotated catalogue of documents relating to Vincent de Paul and housed in the papal archives.  This work may involve some transcription and translation.  The documents will date from 1625, the year in which de Paul established the Congregation of the Mission, to 1737, the year of his canonisation.  The postholder will be based at NUI Galway, but will be required to undertake a number of research trips to Rome during their period of employment.

The candidate:
The candidate should possess a PhD in History or a relevant discipline.  Candidates will also require the following:

  • ability to read Latin documents (seventeenth-eighteenth century)
  • at least intermediate competency in spoken Italian
  • at least intermediate competency in written and spoken English
  • basic IT literacy.
